I’m Matt Clark, a British skier, kayaker and writer living in the Austrian Alps.
I’ve been living full-time in Innsbruck, the main city of the Austrian state of Tirol, since I graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2012. In winter I spend much of my time in the mountains skiing. I like powder and freeriding, so in recent years I’ve increasingly found myself skitouring and hiking away from the lifts to find good snow. I guess I’ve become a bit spoilt these days, but I’d rather ski one epic run in untracked snow than 20 mediocre laps from the lifts.
In summer my main focus is whitewater kayaking. After kayaking to a reasonably high level 3+ times a week at university in Scotland I had a bit of a break my first few years in Innsbruck, but I’ve fallen head over heels back in love with the sport over the past two summers. Nothing else that I’ve found come close to the sheer flow state that comes from being part of pumping alpine river in full flow – and there’s nothing I’d rather do on a 35°+ summer day than slide into some cool glacial meltwater.
As well as enjoying the beautiful mountains and rivers here at home in Austria, I’ve been a bit of a lucky boy when it comes to travel, which has become another passion of mine over the years. My first ‘big’ trip to kayak on the Nile Uganda was a really formative experience for me, but skiing has taken me to a few exotic places too, like Japan, Russia and Kashmir.
Indonesia is also one of my favourite places, and somewhere that continues to call me. I’m a terrible surfer but I have so much fun in the waves no matter how much I beater, and I love the simple life that goes with it – and it’s the perfect excuse to add a few more beautiful tropical locations to the bucket list.
My working life and career has mostly involved various flavours of content marketing and social media management, happily mostly revolving around outdoor sports and travel in some way, shape or form. My articles have been published in around 50 different ski and surf magazines around the world, on 5 continents and in a number of different languages.
I also founded a start-up business called BAMWOO. We make bamboo toothbrushes and alternatives to plastic products, and plant one tree for every product we sell. Check out our #onebrushonetree mission to keep up to date with our reforestation progress.
